If Walls Could Talk
Charleston Architecture & History Tour
As an architectural historian, it is my pleasure to offer walking tours of Charleston’s Old and Historic District, leading guests through the city’s grandest avenues and quiet streets rarely discovered by visitors. I’ve written three books about the city and love to share my insights about its architecture, both in terms of historic styles and the stories these buildings can tell about their inhabitants and the events that unfolded around them.
This tour highlights Charleston’s finest buildings, offering lessons about architectural traditions, including Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival styles and Charleston’s iconic single house. It delves into the history of Charleston from early years as a walled colonial outpost, through its zenith as one of the richest cities in 18th- and 19th century America, to its fall in the Civil War and postwar demise. Examples of restored structures that have survived war, fire, earthquake, tornados and modern threats of demolition illustrate the success of 20th-century preservation initiatives that have kept Charleston’s unique streetscape miraculously intact. Thanks to its gorgeous architecture and fascinating legacy, Charleston is a treasure chest. I look forward to bringing its history to life for you.
